A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
