The speculation around The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team might be building a faster-paced experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
