A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
