Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
