Police stated they were alerted by a resident who found a vehicle in Hanau marked with red-colored liquid

Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then discovered numerous other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say early analysis show the substance was probably blood from a person.

"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they added.

City officials announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.

An important official stated the incident left him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist violent incident in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
