The UK and US have finalized a important bilateral deal that will ensure no levies on UK pharmaceutical exports going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost funding on medicines through the National Health Service (NHS). This move guarantees that duties on these crucial goods will remain at zero for a period of 36 months.

This deal is in response to recent statements to hike duties on patented pharmaceutical imports, with figures discussed as high as 100%.

"This arrangement between the UK strengthens the global environment for new treatments and establishes long-overdue equity to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a statement said.

Commercial Impact

Medicines represent one of the the United Kingdom's most significant goods shipped to the United States, which is by far the largest market for large British pharmaceutical firms.

Trade data indicate that in the one-year period to the end of September, the UK sold medicines totaling billions to the US. This figure made up a significant portion of all goods exports in that span.

"This agreement secures work, boosts funding and facilitates the UK to emerge as a worldwide center for life sciences," a government official stated.

Key British Pledges

The pact entails several notable changes from the British government:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it judges new medicines to be too expensive by twenty-five percent.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to double overall health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6% over the following ten-year period.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage manufacturers must refund to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at fifteen percent. In the past, refunds topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a protracted row between the drug companies and the British authorities over medicine costs and regulatory access.

These tensions were heightened by claims that US consumers were paying a premium for the same drugs than consumers in the other developed nations.

Recently, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while major funding commitments have been announced toward US facilities.

The Science Minister acknowledged that the NHS had to increase expenditure on treatments, noting that its spending on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its total funding over the previous ten-year period.
